Astrophysics of Planet Formation

Astrophysics of Planet Formation Cambridge University Press; 1 edition (January 18, 2010) | ISBN: 0521887453 | 294 pages | PDF | 14 MB

The study of planet formation has been revolutionized by recent observational breakthroughs, which have allowed the detection and characterization of extrasolar planets, the imaging of protoplanetary disks, and the discovery of the Solar System's Kuiper Belt. Written for beginning graduate students, this textbook provides a basic understanding of the astrophysical processes that shape the formation of planetary systems. It begins by describing the structure and evolution of protoplanetary disks, moves on to the formation of planetesimals, terrestrial and gas giant planets, and concludes by surveying new theoretical ideas for the early evolution of planetary systems. Covering all phases of planet formation - from protoplanetary disks to the dynamical evolution of planetary systems - this introduction can be understood by readers with backgrounds in planetary science, observational and theoretical astronomy. It highlights the physical principles underlying planet formation and the areas where more research and new observations are needed.

50th IMO - 50 Years of International Mathematical Olympiads

50th IMO - 50 Years of International Mathematical Olympiads by Hans-Dietrich Gronau, Hanns-Heinrich Langmann, and Dierk Schleicher
S-r | 2011 | ISBN: 3642145647 | 241 pages | PDF | 11 MB

In July 2009 Germany hosted the 50th International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO). For the very first time the number of participating countries exceeded 100, with 104 countries from all continents. Celebrating the 50th anniversary of the IMO provides an ideal opportunity to look back over the past five decades and to review its development to become a worldwide event. This book is a report about the 50th IMO as well as the IMO history. A lot of data about all the 50 IMOs are included.

We list the most successful contestants, the results of the 50 Olympiads and the 112 countries that have ever taken part. It is impressive to see that many of the world’s leading research mathematicians were among the most successful IMO participants in their youth. Six of them gave presentations at a special celebration: Bollobas, Gowers, Lovasz, Smirnov, Tao and Yoccoz. This book is aimed at students in the IMO age group and all those who have interest in this worldwide leading competition for highschool students.

Basic Writing (Reference Guides to Rhetoric and Composition)

Basic Writing (Reference Guides to Rhetoric and Composition) by George Otte, Rebecca Williams Mlynarczyk

Parlor Press | 2010 | ISBN: 1602351740 | 248 pages | PDF | 12 MB

Framed by historic developments-from the Open Admissions movement of the 1960s and 1970s to the attacks on remediation that intensified in the 1990s and beyond-BASIC WRITING traces the arc of these large social and cultural forces as they have shaped and reshaped the field. GEORGE OTTE and REBECCA WILLIAMS MLYNARCZYK balance fidelity to the past with present relevance, local concerns with (presumptively) global knowledge, personal judgment with (apparent) objectivity. BASIC WRITING circles back on the same general story, looking for different themes or seeing the same themes from different perspectives. What emerges is a gestalt of Basic Writing that will give readers interested in its history, self-definition, pedagogy, or research a sense of the important trends and patterns. Otte and Mlynarczyk make research trajectories clear without oversimplifying them or denying the undeniable blurring, dissensus, and differential development that characterizes the field. GEORGE OTTE is a member of the doctoral faculty at the CUNY Graduate Center in the PhD Programs in English, Urban Education, and Interactive Technology and Pedagogy. He served as coeditor of the JOURNAL OF BASIC WRITING from 1996 to 2002. He is the coauthor with Nondita Mason of WRITERS' ROLES: ENACTMENTS OF THE PROCESS (Harcourt, 1994) and, with Linda Palumbo, of CASTS OF THOUGHT: WRITING IN AND AGAINST TRADITION (Macmillan, 1990). REBECCA WILLIAMS MLYNARCZYK has taught basic writing at the City University of New York since 1974. She is currently professor of English at the CUNY Graduate Center and Kingsborough Community College, where she codirects the ESL program. She is the author of CONVERSATIONS OF THE MIND: THE USES OF JOURNAL WRITING FOR SECOND-LANGUAGE LEARNERS (Erlbaum) and the coauthor, with Steven Haber, of IN OUR OWN WORDS: STUDENT WRITERS AT WORK (Cambridge). She has served as coeditor of the JOURNAL OF BASIC WRITING since 2003.

German Resistance Against Hitler: The Search for Allies Abroad, 1938-1945

German Resistance Against Hitler: The Search for Allies Abroad, 1938-1945 by Klemens von Klemperer
Oxford University Press, USA | 1992 | ISBN: 0198219407 | 512 pages | PDF | 34 MB

This book traces the many efforts of the German Resistance to forge alliances with Hitler's opponents outside Germany. The Allied agencies, notably the British Foreign Office and the U.S. State Department, were ill-prepared to deal with the unorthodox approaches of the Widerstand. Ultimately, the Allies' policy of "absolute silence," the Grand Alliance with the Soviet Union, and the demand for "unconditional surrender" pushed the war to its final denouement, disregarding the German Resistance. Von Klemperer's scholarly and detailed study uncovers the activities and beliefs of numerous individuals who fought against Nazism within Germany. He explores the formation of their policy and analyzes the relations of the Resistance with the Vatican and the ecumenical movement, the intelligence agencies of the Allied powers, and the resistance movements outside Germany. Measured by the conventional standards of diplomacy, the German Resistance to Hitler was a failure. However, von Klemperer shows that many of the principles and strategies of the German Resistance, albeit ignored or overridden by the Allies during wartime, were to find their place in the concerns of international relations in the post-war period.

Pearson; 3 ed | 2003 | ISBN: 8177588591 | 456 pages | PDF | 13.7 MB

Accompanying this third edition, there is a completely new Workbook co-authored by ELT specialists Edward Woods and Rudy Coppieters, which will help students to 'internalise' the contents of the grammar.

A Communicative Grammar of English employs a communicative rather than a structural approach to the learning of English grammar This edition is divided into three parts. Part One: A guide to the use of this book - looks at the way English grammar varies in different types of English, for example 'formal' and 'informal', 'spoken' and 'written'. Part Two: Grammar in use - the central and largest part of the book, presents grammar through the eyes of the communicator and focuses on the uses of grammar rather than on grammatical structure. Part Three: A-Z in English grammar - provides a useful and alphabetically arranged guide to English grammar. This new edition includes more real examples taken from corpus data. Increased emphasis is given to grammar in spoken language, providing a better balance between written and spoken English.

Ernst & Young's Personal Financial Planning Guide

Ernst & Young's Personal Financial Planning Guide by Ernst & Young
Wiley | ISBN: 0471687243 | PDF | 552 Pages | 2004 Year | 12 Mb

As is common with financial planners, this one, written by staff at one of the Big Six accounting firms, covers such things as determining net worth, setting up and following a budget, accumulating assets (most importantly by developing the savings habit), and stocks, bonds, mutual funds, and cash equivalents. It explains investment risk and return; home buying and selling; the various types of insurance (life, home, health, car, and disability); the financial consequences of marriage, prenuptial agreements, and divorce; paying for college; and estate planning.

The work is unique in a couple of areas: it covers starting a business especially thoroughly and bases planning on a "life event" perspective?gearing the planning to the goal. Unfortunately, in common with other financial planners, it virtually ignores singles. Up to date, comprehensive, easy to use, and reasonably priced, this merits purchase for general collections.?Alex Wenner, Indiana Univ. Libs., Bloomington

Enterprise Modeling and Computing With UML

Enterprise Modeling and Computing With UML
Publisher: IGI Global | ISBN: 159904174X | edition 2006 | PDF | 335 pages | 12 mb

Enterprise Modeling and Computing with UML bridges two fields that are closely related, but are often studied in isolation: enterprise modeling and information systems modeling. The principal idea is to use a standard language for modeling information systems, UML, as a catalyst, and investigate its potential for modeling enterprises. Enterprise Modeling and Computing with UML shows both the potential and the limit of using UML in an enterprise modeling context and a broad spectrum of ideas for aligning the development of information systems with the management of an enterprise.

Bailout Nation: How Greed and Easy Money Corrupted Wall Street and Shook the World Economy

Bailout Nation: How Greed and Easy Money Corrupted Wall Street and Shook the World Economy by Barry Ritholtz W iley | 2009 | ISBN: 0470520388 | 332 pages | PDF | 12 MB

A riveting indictment of those responsible for our current financial mess Bailout Nation offers one of the clearest looks at the financial lenders, regulators, and politicians responsible for the financial crisis of 2008. Written by Barry Ritholtz, one of today's most popular economic bloggers and a well-established industry pundit, this book skillfully explores how the United States evolved from a rugged independent nation to a soft Bailout Nation-where financial firms are allowed to self-regulate in good times, but are bailed out by taxpayers in bad times. Entertaining and informative, this book clearly shows you how years of trying to control the economy with easy money has finally caught up with the federal government and how its practice of repeatedly rescuing Wall Street has come back to bite them. # The definitive book on the financial crisis of 2008 # Names the villains responsible for this tragedy-from financial regulators to politicians # Shows how each bailout throughout modern history has impacted what happened in the future # Examines why the consumer/taxpayer is left suffering in an economy of bubbles, bailouts, and possible inflation Scathing, but fair, Bailout Nation is a voice of reason in these uncertain economic times.

ActionScript mit JavaScript: Zu Flash MX

Christian Wenz, Tobias Hauser, "ActionScript mit JavaScript: Zu Flash MX"
G..ileo C..ting | 2002 | ISBN: 3898422631 | 624 pages | PDF | 9 MB

3sat, Oktober 2002

Ancient Rome: From Romulus and Remus to the Visigoth Invasion

Ancient Rome: From Romulus and Remus to the Visigoth Invasion by Kathleen Kuiper
Rosen Education Service | 2010 | ISBN: 1615301070, 1615302077 | 226 pages | PDF | 15 MB

Ancient Rome’s influence cannot be overstated. The English language, government, and culture—from basics such as the alphabet and calendar to more sophisticated legal systems—are so heavily saturated with Roman traits that it is impossible to imagine what the world would be like if Rome had not flourished. Any civilization whose influence reverberates so strongly around the globe thousands of years after its fall deserves a closer look, and that is what this book provides. Ancient Rome: From Romulus and Remus to the Visigoth Invasion transports readers back to a time of intrigue, conquest, invention, and empire building.

Readers also will be introduced to the
Caesars, warriors, senators, patricians,
and plebeians who built, governed, conquered,
and inhabited the ever-expanding
territories under Roman rule.
From its mythical founding by
Romulus on Palatine Hill, Rome had
devised a political and social framework
from which the empire would fall away
and return and to which emerging countries
and civilizations would look for
centuries to come. Popular images of
Rome conjure the picture of a fully formed
state with vast lands and a multilayered
government and social order, but its
beginnings were humble. The once-small
village of Rome transformed itself into an
empire through organized government,
an expansionist military policy, and
openness to the cultures of the lands
Rome had dominated throughout the
ancient world.

Analogy in Grammar: Form and Acquisition

James P. Blevins, Juliette Blevins "Analogy in Grammar: Form and Acquisition"
Oxford University Press | English | 2009-07-15 | ISBN: 0199547548 | 400 pages | PDF | 1,4 MB

In this book, leading researchers in morphology, syntax, language acquisition, psycholinguistics, and computational linguistics address central questions about the form and acquisition of analogy in grammar. What kinds of patterns do speakers select as the basis for analogical extension? What types of items are particularly susceptible or resistant to analogical pressures? At what levels do analogical processes operate and how do processes interact? What formal mechanisms are appropriate for modelling analogy? The novel synthesis of typological, theoretical, computational, and developmental paradigms in this volume brings us closer to answering these questions than ever before.
